Replacement and new roofs
Garage, shed and carport roofing in Dallas
The garage roof is usually the one nobody watched, until the tools rust or the carport starts dripping on the truck. Small roofs have their own details, and they get the same care as the house.

Quick answer
Garage, shed and carport roofing in Dallas covers re-roofing detached garages to match the house, replacing shed and workshop roofs in shingle or metal, re-sheeting or membrane-roofing low-slope carports, and metal roofs on barns and outbuildings around Ellis County. Each roof is matched to its pitch and framing, which on small buildings is often lighter than a house.
The job
Small roofs fail in their own ways
Outbuildings were often framed and roofed to a lower standard than the house: thinner decking, wider rafter spacing, no drip edge, felt nailed straight over the boards. They also get less attention, so a leak runs for years before anyone notices the rotten sill plate or the rusted tools.
We start by checking the framing, then choose the roof for the pitch and the use: matched shingles on a garage that sits beside the house, metal on a workshop or barn, membrane on a flat carport.

Budget
What sets the price of an outbuilding roof
Small roofs are priced by the job; there is no published Dallas range we use. These factors set the number.
- Size
Small roofs have a minimum job cost for setup and disposal.
- Material
Shingles, metal panels or membrane.
- Decking
Thin or rotten decking replaced before roofing.
- Framing
Weak rafters or purlins reinforced.
- Matching
Garage shingles matched to the house.
- Access
Tight backyards and fences slow tear-off.
- Combined jobs
Cheaper alongside the house roof.
Your options
Shingles, metal or membrane on a small roof
The pitch and the building's use decide it.

| Compare | Shingles | Metal panels | Membrane |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Garages that match the house | Workshops, barns, sheds | Flat and low-slope carports |
| Pitch | Needs the shingle minimum | Works on lower pitches | Very low slopes |
| Life | Same as the house roof | Long, with fastener care | Long, with seam care |
Scope
What an outbuilding roof includes
The same scope as a house roof, sized to the building.
- Framing and decking checked first
- Soft or thin decking replaced
- Underlayment rated for the material
- Drip edge at eaves and rakes
- Matched shingles or chosen panel profile
- Flashing where it meets a wall
- Closure strips on metal roofs
- Ridge vent where the building needs it
- Debris hauled and site cleaned

Detached garage roofs
A detached garage usually wants to match the house, so we identify the house shingle and use the same line and color. Garage decking is often 1/2 inch or thinner on wider rafter spacing, and we replace soft or undersized sheets before re-roofing rather than roofing over a bounce. Drip edge, a starter course and a vented ridge go on like any other roof, because a hot, unvented garage attic cooks the new shingles the same way a house attic does.
Shed and workshop roofs
Sheds and workshops are often roofed in whatever was cheapest, commonly three-tab over felt on thin decking, or rolled roofing that has cracked. We re-deck where needed and install shingles or, on low pitches and working buildings, a metal roof that outlasts the building's use. A workshop with power tools and stored lumber is worth keeping dry, and the difference in price on a small roof is modest. A small roof also gets a proper drip edge, which most sheds never had, so the walls stop rotting at the top.
Carport roofs
Attached and freestanding carports are usually low-slope, which is why so many leak when they were shingled or covered with rolled roofing. We re-roof them in a membrane or in metal panels, depending on the pitch and whether the carport ties into the house. Where a carport meets the house wall, the joint gets proper flashing rather than caulk, and gutters carry the runoff away from the drive. Posts and beams are checked for rot at the base while we are there.
Barns and outbuildings
Around Ennis and across Ellis County, barns, equipment sheds and agricultural buildings are mostly metal, and their roofs fail at fasteners, laps and trim. We re-screw, reseal and replace panels on sound roofs, and re-sheet the ones that are past saving, using the right panel profile and closure strips so birds and wasps stay out. Open-sided sheds get the same trim details at the eaves and gables where wind does its damage. The old fasteners are kept in a bucket so you can see why.
Roofing in Dallas
What we see on Dallas roofs
In March 2025, straight-line winds of 75 to 80 mph in Ellis County were strong enough to peel the wall off a metal commercial building in Ennis and partially remove a home roof east of Waxahachie. Outbuildings and carports take that kind of wind worse than houses, because their trim and fasteners were rarely installed to the same standard. Our Ennis head office handles most of this rural and outbuilding work, and we pay particular attention to eave and gable trim on every metal building.

Questions we get
Garage, shed and carport roof questions
Yes, with the same shingle line and color where it is still made.
Often; it outlasts shingles on low-use buildings and suits lower pitches.
Most are too flat for the shingles or rolled roofing on them.
Yes, especially around Ellis County.
Yes, and it is cheaper done together.
Check with the city; small repairs usually do not.
Yes; the framing is reinforced before re-roofing.
Most outbuildings are done in a day.
Garage or shed roof overdue? It is usually a one-day job
We check the framing, match the roof to the building, and leave it dry for the next storm.
