The suburb the Mathews Bridge built

Arlington is often called Jacksonville's first major post-war suburb built for the automobile. After the Mathews Bridge opened in 1953 it grew faster than any other part of the city through the 1950s and 1960s: by 1955, 19,000 cars a day crossed the bridge, and by 1961 more than 50,000 new residents had moved in. That building rush left thousands of block and frame ranch homes whose original duct layouts were designed for much smaller cooling systems than they carry today.

On the ground

Ranch homes that have outgrown their ducts

Mid-century ranch homes were often built with a single central return and short duct runs sized for the first air conditioners of their day, then expanded with Florida rooms, garage conversions and additions. A bigger system on the same ducts gets noisier, not more comfortable. We check static pressure and room airflow before any replacement quote.

Additions and enclosed porches are usually the hottest rooms in the house, and a ductless head often cools them better than extending the old ducts. Low attics over block walls also benefit from added insulation, which cuts the load on everything else.

FAQ

Arlington questions

Why is my Arlington Florida room always the hottest room?

Enclosed porches and additions usually sit at the end of the duct run, or have none. A ductless head is often the simplest fix.

Will a bigger AC fix my mid-century Arlington home?

Usually not on its own. If the ducts can't carry the airflow, a bigger unit just gets louder. We test the ducts and size the system to the house.
