Whole-home air filtration for Jacksonville homes

Media filter cabinets, HEPA bypass units and electronic air cleaners installed at the air handler and matched to what your blower can actually push.

Updated September 2026

Quick answer

What is the best whole-home air filter for a Jacksonville house?

For most Jacksonville homes the best whole-home option is a 4 to 5 inch media filter cabinet at the air handler, rated around MERV 11 to 13, because it catches fine dust and pollen without choking airflow. A thin high-MERV filter in a return grille often restricts the blower and freezes the coil.

Overview

Better filtration without starving the system

The filter's job is to clean the air without getting in the blower's way. Here, where systems run most of the year, that balance matters. A thin one-inch filter rated MERV 13 slid into a return grille can cut airflow enough to freeze the evaporator coil on a hot afternoon, and a frozen coil is a no-cool call.

The fix is surface area. A deep media cabinet mounted at the air handler holds a pleated filter four or five inches thick, so it can filter finely while letting plenty of air through. For homes with serious allergy or asthma concerns, a HEPA bypass unit or an electronic cleaner goes further. We measure static pressure before and after so you know the system is still breathing properly.

Cost factors

What drives the cost of a filtration upgrade

  • Type of systemA media cabinet costs least; HEPA bypass and electronic cleaners cost more.
  • Return duct layoutSome returns need modification to fit a cabinet at the air handler.
  • Blower capacityA weak blower may limit how fine a filter can go without airflow loss.
  • ElectricalHEPA bypass and electronic units need power at the air handler.
  • Ongoing filtersDeep media filters and HEPA elements are replaced on a schedule.

We measure static pressure first, then price the option that fits your system.

A portable purifier is a fine stopgap for one bedroom. Whole-home filtration treats every room the system serves.

What we fix

Media filter cabinets

A media cabinet is a metal housing installed in the return duct right at the air handler, with a door for the filter. The filter inside is deep and pleated, typically lasting six months to a year depending on dust and pets. Most homes do well at MERV 11 to 13. We size the cabinet to the blower's airflow, seal it so air can't bypass the filter, and move the filter out of the ceiling grille so you're changing it once or twice a year, not monthly.

HEPA bypass units

True HEPA filtration is too restrictive to put inline with a residential blower. A bypass unit solves that by pulling part of the airflow through its own HEPA filter with its own fan, then returning it to the duct. It's the option for homes with severe allergies, asthma or a family member who needs the cleanest air possible. It adds a small fan's worth of electricity and a filter change schedule, both of which we'll explain before you decide. We size the bypass fan to your duct system.

Electronic air cleaners

Electronic cleaners charge particles and collect them on plates, catching very fine particles with little airflow restriction. The trade-off is upkeep: the collector cells need regular washing to keep working, and some older designs produced small amounts of ozone. We only install models certified for low or no ozone output, and we'll be straight about the cleaning routine so the unit doesn't quietly stop working after a few months. If washing cells every month or two sounds like a chore, a media cabinet is usually the better fit, and we'll say so.

Filtration in a house that runs its AC most of the year

About 57 percent of Jacksonville's housing was built after 2000, and most of those homes put the air handler and return in an attic or garage closet where a thin filter grille is the only line of defense. With the muggy season stretching from May through October, the blower moves air through that filter for months without a break, so the filter loads up fast. Moving to a deep media cabinet usually cuts dust and extends the time between changes.

How the job runs

How a filtration upgrade runs

  1. 1

    Measure

Static pressure and airflow checked with the current filter.

  2. 2

    Recommend

Cabinet, HEPA or electronic option matched to the system and your needs.

  3. 3

    Install

Return modified, unit mounted and sealed, power run if needed.

  4. 4

    Re-measure

Static pressure checked again to confirm the blower isn't strained.

  5. 5

FAQ

Air filtration questions

Can a better filter freeze my AC?

Yes, a thin high-MERV filter can restrict airflow enough to freeze the coil. A deep media cabinet avoids that.

What MERV rating should I use?

Most homes do well at MERV 11 to 13 in a deep media cabinet.

Is HEPA worth it?

For severe allergies or asthma, a HEPA bypass unit gives the cleanest air without straining the blower.

Do electronic air cleaners make ozone?

Some older designs did. We install only models certified for low or no ozone output.

How often do media filters get changed?

Typically every six to twelve months, sooner with pets or heavy dust.

Will filtration help with musty smells?

Filtration catches particles. Musty smells usually point to moisture or a dirty coil, which we'd check separately.

Which filtration brands do you install?

Honeywell, Carrier, Trane, Lennox and other major filtration lines.
